EPS Foam Recycling | How to recycle Expanded Polystyrene

What is EPS, and why is it need to recycle this material?

It goes by numerous names: EPS, Styrofoam, expanded polystyrene, and also when you think about the many high qualities of EPS it is no surprise that this material is widely used.

EPS is light-weight, long lasting, shock-absorbing, moisture-resistant and is especially suitable for protection of numerous items during transportation and storage of e.g. food and medical machines.

EPS is not biodegradable, but pure EPS is 100% recyclable. Nonetheless, due to the fact that EPS contains 98% air, it can be expensive to recycle since that it is very space consuming to store, equally as it is expensive to transport. For that reason, EPS recycling is deemed too troublesome as well as completely recyclable EPS regrettably ends up in landfills or incinerators in many places.

With GREENMAX's hot melting machine, EPS with 98% air is no longer an issue. In GREENMAX hot melting machine, the EPS can be compressed in a ratio of 90:1. In addition to making storage and also transport cheaper and easier, the ingots of compressed EPS can be sold for further recycling as well as the demand for recycled EPS is raising. For each kilo of EPS that is recycled, the use of 3 liters of oil is saved. EPS recycling thus offers both an economic and also environmental advantage.

3 steps for EPS foam recycling with GREENMAX hot melting machine

Step 1: Collect the waste EPS

Collect the waste: First, the EPS is collected separately. It can e.g. take place in shops where EPS is sorted from other packaging materials or at recycling sites where the EPS is sorted from other types of waste etc. To make certain the highest possible price for the compacted EPS, it is essential that EPS with dirt on it have to be sorted out.

Step 2: Compaction in the GREENMAX hot melting machine

The GREENMAX is then fed manually, using a conveyor belt or from a silo. When the EPS enters the hopper on the GREENMAX, it is crushed into smaller sized pieces by the pre-crusher. These chunks of expanded polystyrene then fall into the machine. The screw as well as the melting part ensure that the EPS is compressed right into ingots that are easy to handle, pile and also transport.

Step 3: Pack and ship the compacted EPS for further recycling

The compressed ingots can be sold to an extrusion plant, where the ingots are granulated. After the EPS is remelted, it comes to be a new polystyrene pellet, which can either be used as polystyrene or made right into new recycled EPS (expanded polystyrene).

Find the right machine for your EPS foam recycling

Which machine is the optimal solution for your EPS recycling relies on your EPS quantity, how and in what way you want to feed the machine.

GREENMAX offers EPS hot melting machine in 3 basic sizes:

Mars C100: This model has a capacity of 100kg/h and they are therefore well suited for places that handle up to 10 tons of EPS annually, e.g. retail and small industrial enterprises. Read more here.

Mars C200: This model has a capacity of 200kg/h and are therefore recommended for places that handle between 10 and 30 tons per year. Read more about Mars C200 here.

Mars C300: Capacity of 300 kg/h. This model can be fed either manually in a 45-degree hopper or with a conveyor belt in a vertical hopper. This model is recommended for places that handle between 30 and 50 tons per year. Read more about Mars C300 here.

If you require a larger compaction capability, we also provide larger systems where several melting machines are incorporated with an independent shredder and a silo for keeping the granulated EPS before it goes into the melting machines themselves.
